Story
"Midnight Runners," directed by Kim Joo-hwan, is a 2017 South Korean action comedy film that brings together elements of buddy cop films with a coming-of-age story. The movie introduces us to two young men, Hee-yeol (played by Park Seo-joon) and Ki-joon (played by Kang Ha-neul), who are studying to become police officers at the Korean National Police University.
One night, while out on a routine patrol as part of their training, Hee-yeol and Ki-joon witness a shocking crime—an abduction taking place right before their eyes. Despite their efforts to report the incident to the police, they are frustrated by the lack of urgency in the official investigation. Feeling disillusioned with the system, the two friends decide to take matters into their own hands.
Hee-yeol and Ki-joon embark on their own amateur investigation to find the kidnapped woman. Armed with determination, but lacking in experience and resources, they bumble their way through the streets of Seoul, following leads and getting into all sorts of humorous and action-packed situations.
As they dig deeper into the case, they find themselves in over their heads, uncovering a dark underworld of crime and corruption. Along the way, they must confront dangerous criminals, outsmart cunning adversaries, and navigate the complexities of their own friendship.
The film strikes a balance between adrenaline-pumping chases and laugh-out-loud humor, keeping audiences entertained from start to finish. It's a story of two young men on a quest for justice, learning valuable lessons about responsibility, courage, and the importance of sticking together in the face of adversity.
"Midnight Runners" earned praise for its energetic direction by Kim Joo-hwan, the charismatic performances of its leads, and its engaging mix of action and comedy.
