Story
Directed by Tom Graeff, this 1959 science fiction film is a cult classic that merges classic '50s sci-fi themes with teenage melodrama. The story follows the arrival of a group of extraterrestrial beings on Earth, who plan to use the planet as a breeding ground for their gargantuan lobsters, called Gargons. The film's protagonist, Derek, one of the aliens, rebels against his own people and falls in love with a human girl named Betty Morgan. The plot revolves around Derek's efforts to thwart his species' invasive plans while on the run from the malevolent alien leader, Thor.Tom Graeff, the film's director, also served as the writer, producer, editor, and even appeared in a small role, showcasing a remarkable multi-tasking effort. Graeff is known in the sci-fi community for his work in low-budget, independent cinema, and his signature do-it-yourself approach is evident in this film's production. Unfortunately, Graeff's career didn't flourish after this, partly due to personal struggles and the film's initial commercial failure. The cast features a number of lesser-known actors, with David Love playing the alien-turned-hero Derek and Dawn Bender starring as his human love interest, Betty. While the acting is often cited as campy and melodramatic, it adds to the film's kitsch and cult appeal. Other notable cast members include Bryan Grant as Thor, who delivers one of the movie's most memorable performances as the menacing alien antagonist. Despite being initially overlooked, the film found a second life in the 1980s and 1990s through television airings and home video, securing its place as a beloved entry in the realm of campy science fiction cinema.
